Housing Standards Officer (Disabled Facilities Grants) Fixed Term – 1 Day per Week (12 months) – Mid Sussex District Council
Location: Haywards Heath, West Sussex
Salary: £35,412 – £39,862 pa
About the Role:
Mid Sussex District Council is seeking a Housing Standards Officer to support the delivery of Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) assessments on a fixed-term, one-day-per-week basis. The post will focus primarily on property assessments, feasibility of adaptations, and supporting customers through the DFG process, working closely with Occupational Therapists and partner agencies. This role is ideally suited to:
- Occupational Therapists seeking an additional day’s work.
- Part-time Housing Standards / Environmental Health Officers wishing to supplement their current role.
- Housing or property professionals with relevant technical and assessment experience.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Responding to Disabled Facilities Grant enquiries and carrying out property inspections to assess the feasibility, suitability, and practicability of recommended adaptations, in line with current legislation.
- Working collaboratively with Occupational Therapists, applicants, landlords, and partner agencies to deliver appropriate adaptations and ensure a positive customer experience.
- Maintaining accurate records, including photographs, plans, and associated documentation relating to DFG applications.
You will work closely with other staff and management of the friendly and successful Housing Standards team, to ensure the team continuously delivers the highest quality environmental health services to our customers.
About You:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in processing, inspecting, or supporting the delivery of Disabled Facilities Grants or similar adaptation-based work.
- A relevant qualification (e.g. degree, BTEC, HND) in Environmental Health, housing, construction, surveying, occupational therapy, or a related discipline.
- Good organisational skills and able to manage workload in an efficient, effective manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally to members, officers and the public.
The Council recognises that applicants for this role may be balancing other professional commitments. The one-day-per-week working pattern offers flexibility, and there is scope to agree the working day by arrangement.
