About us
This is a newly created, permanent role within the Academic Skills team designed to support the Academic Skills programme and the student success strand of Strategy 2030.
The Lecturer in Education and Academic Skills Tutor plays a pivotal role in supporting students across all levels of study at the university. Combining expertise in Learning Development, EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and Inclusive pedagogies, the lecturer will design and deliver academic skills provision that enhances students’ learning experiences and academic success
About the role
The role involves assessing student needs, designing and delivering open sign-up workshops, designing and delivering integrated academic skills sessions within faculties, holding 1:1 tutorials, and (where appropriate) developing and delivering tailored synchronous and asynchronous resources. The role holder must be confident teaching small and large groups, online and in-person, as well as hosting 1:1 tutorials. They should have a sound understanding of integrating the principles of academic literacy and inclusive pedagogies into, through and around the taught curriculum in UKHE.
The successful candidate should have experience and expertise in supporting all demographics of student and bring practical knowledge of cross and inter-cultural academic communication. This expertise will inform their teaching practice across the full range of the team’s activities, ensuring students receive appropriate and effective support.
The post holder must be able to integrate AI tools and responsible AI practices into their teaching where pedagogically appropriate. This includes understanding how AI technologies can support students’ academic development and being able to teach basic AI literacy skills as part of broader academic skills provision.
This role is centred on teaching, and a robust teaching background is essential.
Candidates should showcase their ability to effectively plan, design, and deliver skills based programmes to diverse student groups. We expect the post holder’s work to be evidence-based and informed by pedagogic principles.
The successful candidate will be a good communicator, engaging with relevant stakeholders and students. They will find and capitalise on opportunities to build relationships and support collaboration where appropriate to broaden the student experience and enable success.
The Lecturer in Education and Academic Skills tutor will contribute to the strategic goals of the Centre for International Education and Languages.
The role holder will be committed to conducting scholarly activity related to their role and disseminate findings and best practice within the team, institution and sector.
The post holder will be expected to work flexibly to provide cover for and/or work in collaboration with colleagues. Some Wednesday afternoon, early morning, early evening and weekend working may be required, as appropriate (weekend work approx. once per year).
Due to the specific responsibilities of the post, there will be some points during the year when it will either not be possible for the post holder to take annual leave, or it will be necessary to limit the amount of annual leave that can be taken
This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
