Overview

Research Assistant (Post Wellcome ECA Fellowship) – Strand, London, WC2R 2LS

About us:

At the IoPPN, our staff and students work to transform care for people who are affected by mental health and neurological conditions, through world-class research, education and training, and to serve our communities locally and globally. We are at the forefront of global mental health research and through our partnerships foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care around the world. The IoPPN is a leading centre for mental health and neuroscience research in Europe. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2023).

The Department of Psychology at the IoPPN includes one of the world’s largest groupings of clinical and health psychologists through its close links with King’s Health Partners institutions (KCH, GSTT, SLaM NHS Trusts). The Department’s research interests span a wide range of mental health disorders and physical health problems, including anxiety disorders, trauma, somatoform disorders, pain, psychosis, depression, antisocial personality, disorders in childhood and adolescence, emotion and personality, and neurodegeneration.

We are committed to improving the representation of the populations we serve in our workforce, student body and research participants, and promote equitable access to education, research and psychological interventions.

About the role:

You will assist in the preparation and running of a clinical study within a programme of transdiagnostic research into anhedonia which is funded by Wellcome and led by Dr Clem Edwards (Research Clinical Psychologist/Wellcome ECA Fellow) who you will report to. You will be involved in developing study documents and recruitment materials, identifying and recruiting participants across clinical and non-clinical groups, conducting research assessments using digital technology methods (smartphones and virtual reality), and managing large datasets.

You will work closely with the lived experience advisory panel who provide input into this research programme. This involves working with them creatively to ensure their voices are heard, as well as providing logistical and administrative support for their involvement.

This research programme will give you opportunities to innovate and contribute to the design of novel research studies. There will also be opportunities to conduct analysis, interpretation and write-up results for publications and other dissemination pathways.  There will be the chance to shape how we deliver work in public engagement which communicates effectively about the research to a range of audiences.

In addition, you will receive training in conducting person-centred clinical assessments with people with psychosis and depression. Dr Edwards is a member of the KCL Virtual Reality Lab, and you will learn about the exciting applications of this technology in mental health. Alongside the professional development opportunities in clinical research within Dr Edwards’ research team there are also trailblazing projects in the wider Psychological Approaches to Psychosis theme including world-leading clinical trials and implementation studies.

The post holder will be based at the IoPPN, Denmark Hill, London.

However, the work will sometimes be undertaken across participating teams predominantly within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. We particularly welcome applications from Black and Ethnic Minority candidates as they are currently under-represented within the department at this level.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until April 2028.

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. Visit the  Centre for Research Staff Development for more information.
